The tarot have a long and fascinating history, and for many it is hard to separate the visions of gypsies with dark mascara, outlandish clothes and jewels surrounded by candles in a dark room shuffling their decks with a looming crystal ball to the side and the fact that they are a deck of cards. Understand the power of the tarot cards comes from your belief in them. While some may chose to use the tarot for amusement there are others, many others that use them to gain insight into what is and what will be.

You do not have to go to someone to have your cards read. You can do it yourself, in the comfort and privacy of your own home. Actually, I recommend that you do it yourself. First you will need a deck of tarot cards. There are some that believe your first deck should be a gift, not one that you bought for yourself. Feel free to buy the deck yourself, and spend some time picking the deck that you want. I am a firm believer in picking your own deck because you want one that you are comfortable with and that “speaks” to you. Tarot cards can be found at a good bookstore or a metaphysical shop.

When dealing with tarot card instructions you will want to buy some candles. White candles are good, if you want to pick candles based on what you are going to be consulting the cards about that is good as well. Green for money, red for energy, black for protection, orange for change and so on or you may choose not to use candles. They are recommended, not a must.

Next, make sure that you have a scarf or a special box to keep your tarot cards in. This helps provide a safe and clean environment for your cards. This is something that you should do. Some people choose to “charge” their cards by wrapping them in a scarf and sleeping with them next to their head or heart. The point here is you are building a connection to the cards. If you choose to do this, you will want to sleep with the cards for about a week.

Now comes the really important part of the instructions for your tarot cards. Concentrate as you shuffle your deck on what it is you are asking the cards. So do your reading in a space where you are not distracted. Shuffle as you would any deck of cards, or put them all in a pile and move them around with your hands. Once they are shuffled, cut the deck and while you cut the deck ask your question.

It is now time to deal out your tarot cards. There are many tarot spreads that you can choose from, most depend on what type of reading you are doing. There are many books and internet sites that can help with the different types of spreads and what the cards mean in each position of the spread. Learning these is important to working with your tarot cards.
